  I do believe that you can find answer in the Model Art about Ki.43, there is one section with detailed explanation of the use of this stripes for the unit markings.

Cheers :)

Hi Ken;

Though I figured this is something I'd be asking you, the photo I've attached I believe helps explain it better. The 1st Hikousentai utilized at that time and also in New Guinea a very elaborate and perhaps even the most descriptive of unit markings I've seen on JAFC aircraft.

The first marking of note would be the rudder simply being painted a solid color. That in itself denoting the 1st Hikousentai.

The second aspect to consider would be the color of the paint used upon the rudder. That color denoting Chuutai. Cobalt Blue for the command flight, Red for the 1st Chuutai, White for the 2nd Chuutai, and Yellow for the 3rd Chuutai.

The next two aspects I cannot be sure of as to which is which yet assume the following to be correct. Stripes in a contrasting color were then painted upon the rudder to denote Shoutai, 1st, 2nd, 3rd.

Next, chevrons were painted upon the fuselage to denote the individual aircraft within the shoutai. 1, 2, 3, and none supposedly meaning the 4th.

Now those last two aspects may be reversed as to what they mean. Someone with more knowledge then I can perhaps elaborate.

Finally, the 1st hikousentai utilized a vast number of other markings. Wide stripes about the fuselage to denote the lead aircraft, called a command stipe. Angled, parallel or perpendicular bands upon the wings and horizontal stabilizers, again I'd assume command stripes of a sort. Yet in all cases to make the leaders aircraft much more recognizable at a distance.
